FUNGAL LEATHER

An R&D project run in collaboration with Mykko, a branch of Osmose Studios.

Mycelium's ability to produce materials doesn't just end with solid forms, but also flexible textiles. Mycelium leather was explored as a sustainable alternative to traditional animal leather.

Each sheet is grown over 4 weeks, creating a suede-like material that can be dyed and coated. Following the fungi's natural ability to grown mechanically stable materials, the mycelium leather was explored for application by companies such as Berghaus. The project was supported by UK Innovate research funding as well as the Mayors Entrepreneur award 2019 in London.
